In the California gubernatorial race, President Trump’s endorsement of former Fox News host Steve Hilton isn’t receiving much enthusiasm from some Democratic opponents.
San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan took to X to mock Trump’s “complete and total support” for Hilton, suggesting that if Trump were to win, he would act contrary to what Californians might hope for. He stated, “By endorsing Steve Hilton, Trump is indicating what a Hilton governorship would bring: increased costs, economic turmoil, and a Sacramento beholden to Trump, which could worsen community issues rather than protect them.”
Contrasting himself, Mahan emphasized his own campaign’s focus on reducing costs and advocating for California’s future, while standing firm against Washington D.C.’s interventions.
Hilton seems to be gaining traction in polls, often securing a leading position in the contentious gubernatorial contest, where nine Democrats are pitted against two Republicans, himself and Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco. This situation has raised concerns about a possible Democratic exclusion from the race.
Trump expressed his admiration for Hilton, calling him a “great guy” and suggesting he would contribute positively to California’s governance.
However, Trump isn’t particularly popular in California—about two-thirds of voters disapprove of his immigration policies, as noted by the Los Angeles Times. His support in the state was also limited during the last presidential election, where he garnered just 38% of the vote.
Hilton, who has criticized Governor Gavin Newsom, promises to reduce gas taxes, eliminate bureaucratic hurdles in housing, and enforce programs aimed at eliminating inefficiencies in government.
Meanwhile, Mahan is trying to rally support and donations from influential figures in Silicon Valley but has found it challenging to gain significant recognition in polls, often hovering around 5%. His campaign faced a setback recently with the resignation of a top aide over strategic disagreements.
