Matt Shaw of the Chicago Cubs shares strong message after skipping game for Charlie Kirk memorial

Cubs’ Matt Shaw Attends Charlie Kirk’s Memorial

Chicago Cubs’ third baseman Matt Shaw took a break from his team to fly to Glendale, Arizona, on Sunday. He attended a memorial for Charlie Kirk held at State Farm Stadium, which came during a crucial first-place matchup in the National League.

Shaw shared that he felt compelled to be there, especially after receiving a text from Kirk’s wife, Erica. “It felt like it was really important to me,” he said, reflecting on their connection.

Shaw met Kirk during the offseason in Arizona, a common training ground for teams. In his words, Kirk was one of the most passionate Cubs fans he had ever met, always supportive and reaching out to Shaw after games. “He really was loyal and very supportive,” recalled Shaw.

The memorial was emotional for Shaw as he stood among many who also admired Kirk. “The joy in that room was tangible,” he noted. “Everyone came together to acknowledge how significant their faith was.” He described the event as “really powerful,” hoping it would inspire more unity among people.

Shaw expressed gratitude for the support he received throughout the season, mentioning that Kirk’s encouragement played a major role in his experience. “We had a strong bond through faith,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of that connection.

He spoke with his teammates and the Cubs’ organization before making the decision to attend. Shaw appreciated their understanding and support, highlighting how smoothly the arrangements were handled.

When asked if he feared any negative reactions to his choice, Shaw replied confidently, “I’m not worried at all. My faith drives me every day.” He anticipated some backlash but stood firm in his beliefs and the significance of the memorial.

Unfortunately, without him, the Cubs lost to the Cincinnati Reds 1-0.
