Matthew McConaughey cautions son of losing ‘safety net’ in emotional birthday message

Matthew McConaughey is far from looking stunned or confused.

The father of three is insightful and introspective, having recorded an emotional birthday message for his eldest son, Levi, which he shared on Instagram, offering some practical advice.

“Okay, Levi, you’re about to reach that age,” McConaughey began, “You’ll soon be on your own, and I think that me and your mom have done all we can. You’re not going to be able to rely on us as a safety net forever in this wonderful wild world.”

“Just go out,” he continued. “Have fun. Be aware of your surroundings. Be yourself. Know when to say yes, when to say no and when to say maybe,” he said, laughing. “See the good in other people, but know that not everyone is always paying attention.”

“Take your time and enjoy the journey,” he concluded.

For Levi’s birthday last year, the “Fool’s Gold” actor and his wife, Camila Alves, gave their son permission to join social media as a gift. McConaughey explained that he had been debating the decision for three years with Alves, who felt “uneasy” about the “gift.”

“All his friends have had it for a long time,” Alves said. “We’ve been holding on.”

McConaughey continued about his son, “He knows who he is and where he’s going. I think he’ll get through this. He has a great story to tell and to share. I just want to let you know that you’re going to see a very cool, respectful young man named Levi McConaughey, and I hope you all do your best to treat him the same way.”

“Levi, enjoy the adventure, enjoy sharing your story, enjoying expressing yourself and what you put out there and interacting with people out there,” McConaughey concluded.
