Matthew McConaughey Addresses Yellowstone Spin-off Rumors
Matthew McConaughey recently talked about the swirling speculation surrounding a possible spin-off of “Yellowstone.” In a chat on The Playlist discourse podcast, the 56-year-old actor gave a glimpse into where things stand regarding the rumored project, hinting that there’s still a chance he might enter that universe.
“It’s not more or less than it was when it made a brief splash in the headlines,” McConaughey shared. He added that he and Taylor Sheridan have had ongoing discussions but emphasized, “Nothing is real just yet.” This seems to indicate there’s still some back-and-forth happening.
The buzz about a potential collaboration between McConaughey and Sheridan gained traction in 2023. This was around the time Sheridan was contemplating how to wrap up “Yellowstone” and whether Kevin Costner would make a return. Perhaps it’s the uncertainty of it all that keeps fans on their toes.
During the interval between the show’s first and second halves of its final season, whispers emerged that McConaughey and Sheridan were in talks about a spin-off. Sheridan, in June 2023, noted that McConaughey “seemed like a natural fit.” They had shared ideas over the years, and upon watching “Yellowstone,” McConaughey expressed a desire to dive into its gritty world, leading Sheridan to encourage him to pursue that vision.
“Yellowstone” concluded its series with an off-screen demise for Costner’s character in December 2024. Interestingly enough, it was confirmed before the finale that cast members Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly, who portrayed Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler respectively, would headline their own spin-off titled “Dutton Ranch,” set to explore their journey to Texas.
Even though “Dutton Ranch” expands the “Yellowstone” narrative, Sheridan stepped away from the writers’ room for its first season while still serving as an executive producer. Hauser mentioned the challenges of working with new writers and directors in Sheridan’s absence, reflecting on how different things became on set.
In retrospect, Hauser expressed pride in their accomplishments with the show, acknowledging that it required everyone to adapt quickly to tell the story effectively. He also shared a sense of eagerness for what comes next.
