Matthew Schaefer Aims for NHL Milestone
Just five games into his NHL career, Matthew Schaefer is making waves. His second assist, which contributed to Max Shabanov’s goal against the Senators on Saturday, has allowed him to achieve a scoring streak spanning five consecutive games. This feat makes him the first 18-year-old defenseman to start his career with such a streak in NHL history.
If Schaefer manages to extend his streak to six points in the upcoming game against San Jose, he will match Marek Zidlicky’s record for the longest point streak for a defenseman at the start of his career. Should he reach seven points, he’ll tie Alexander Daigle’s record for the longest consecutive points by a player who began his career as an under-18 player. Quite an accomplishment, right?
While the excitement around him has dimmed just a bit, Schaefer is still well on his way to becoming a standout player. Interestingly, he’s played under 23 minutes on ice in the last two games, notably less than the heavy minutes star players like Patrick Roy have clocked.
The league is quickly taking notice of Schaefer’s skills. In Saturday’s narrow 5-4 victory over the Senators, Ottawa’s physical play seemed aimed at him, limiting his opportunities and occasionally pushing him into rushed decisions. It’s fascinating how different teams adjust their game plans, isn’t it?
Despite having a somewhat controlled playing time, the Islanders have elevated Schaefer to their top power play unit, which could become a permanent change.
“I just want to win,” Schaefer shared last week. “Being there for the team is important to me. I hope they can trust me when it matters.” Such a straightforward yet earnest mindset can make a difference in a player’s performance.
Tuesday’s match against San Jose will also mark Schaefer’s first encounter with No. 2 overall pick Michael Misa and last year’s top pick, Macklin Celebrini. This game could really be something special for him.
