Matthew Stafford's clever tactics keep the Rams performing well

Stafford’s Remarkable Start to the Season

This summer, it seemed like Joke was in control of his own narrative.

But as October arrived, Matthew Stafford flipped the script.

Back in August, reports from the Los Angeles Rams training camp hinted at concerns regarding Stafford’s back, leading to his removal from practice. He received treatment from a unique “Ammortal Chamber,” a trailer set up at the training facility.

Ammortal promotes its chamber as a “wellness device designed to optimize human performance and improve health using various non-invasive techniques.”

Given the circumstances, it’s sort of understandable why jokes emerged.

Still, Stafford was ready to launch into the season. The Rams currently sit at 3-1, sharing the lead in the NFC West with the 49ers and Seahawks as they prepare for an upcoming game against San Francisco.

In these first four games, Stafford completed 67.6% of his passes, throwing for 1,114 yards and racking up eight touchdowns.

“I think it’s safe to say nobody would be shocked if he ends up in the Hall of Fame,” Rams head coach Sean McVay commented about the quarterback this week.

Stafford’s 88-yard touchdown pass to Tutu Atwell during the final minutes secured a win over the previously undefeated Indianapolis Colts. That specific completion stole most of the headlines, although it was not his only noteworthy throw of the game.

One notable pass occurred early on against the Colts:

Facing a critical third down with a second to go, the Rams dialed in a play designed to exploit the corner routes, featuring an isolated Nakua running a hitch on the right side. As the ball snapped from the shotgun, Stafford quickly scanned to the right.

The timing on this throw was impressive. After Stafford delivered the ball, Nakua took a few additional steps in the vertical lane before making his move. Although coverage had its challenges, Stafford’s precision allowed Nakua to gain extra yards after the catch.

Stafford’s first touchdown came just before halftime. Keep an eye on Colts safety Nick Cross during this play.

Stafford started by looking right and then shifted back to Davante Adams on a post route. In a Cover 4 defense, Cross read Stafford’s eyes, jumping the route, hoping to cut off the throw.

However, Stafford anticipated this and cleverly threw behind Cross, allowing Adams to dart into the end zone for a touchdown.

Watching the end zone angle of that play is pretty revealing. Pay attention to how Stafford misdirects Cross with his eyes, successfully keeping the safety away from where he hopes to throw.

It’s one of those throws that feels like pure finesse, showcasing Stafford’s skills.

Another moment reflecting his classic style came when he connected with Nakua on a deep route in the second half. With the Colts shifting into inverted Tampa 2 coverage, Stafford was ready to exploit the opening for a safe throw, ensuring Nakua could secure it without risk.

It’s impressive to witness how Stafford executes under pressure.

On a related note, there was a moment during the game where the Rams faced the Colts with just ten defenders on the field. This misstep by the Colts resulted in that impressive 88-yard touchdown.

And with the upcoming matchup, Stafford and the Rams have a chance to move to 4-1 against a struggling 49ers team. Expect more of those savvy plays from Stafford.
