family means everything maverick mcneelywhich helps explain why he recently hired his younger brother Scout as his full-time caddy.
But no one is rooting for McNeely more than his grandmother, who has had a special “contract” since turning pro about eight years ago.
“We have signed a contract [with her] “Ever since the days when you were on the Korn Ferry Tour and you made $50,000 a week, you had to send her flowers,” McNeely explained.
“She doesn't seem to care that things like that happen more often on the PGA Tour purse than on the Korn Ferry Tour. It's something she's proud of. [for her] around nursing homes. If you are in the top 10, you will also receive chocolate. ”
After 18 career top 10s or 18 boxes of chocolates with flowers for grandma, McNeely finally broke out at last week's RSM Classic. A clutch approach on the final hole paid off and he won by one spot, giving him his first victory on the PGA Tour.
But what will McNeely give his grandmother for the win?
“I think she'll like it too. [the trophy] On her mantelpiece, to be honest,” McNeely added.
“Oh, I don't know, but she loves us and we love her. No one watches my shots as closely as she does.”
Now that the season is over, McNealy has plenty of time to think about what to do for her beloved grandmother. But he has to do something. Forgetting that always creates an awkward situation.
“My grandmother is a witch,” McNealy joked.
“If you forget to send her flowers, weird things happen. Food poisoning, clubs break, balls crack, etc. It's the weirdest thing ever, so you have to stay like this. Maybe you win.” We should give her something a little more special.”
Whatever McNeely gifts her, it will definitely mean the world. McNealy also understands that his relationship with his grandmother is very special, and that in itself is very healthy.
“I know that watching me play golf has given her energy and enjoyment in so many ways that she can't stop talking to people while she's watching me play.” ” McNeely said.
“That's pretty special.”
That's certainly true.
