Max Domi's NHL future uncertain due to issues from back surgery, report indicates

Max Domi, a forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs, has recently had surgery, putting his NHL career on hold.

On May 25, the Maple Leafs reported that Domi underwent an operation to address issues he had during the 2025-26 season. While the specific type of surgery wasn’t disclosed, the team mentioned that he will be out indefinitely due to complications following the procedure.

It’s unusual for the Leafs to publicly share that Domi would be sidelined, particularly since he participated in 80 games last season.

Details surrounding Domi’s surgery remain scarce, but more recent reports indicate he may be facing a significant challenge. According to a publication, Domi had back surgery and reportedly wasn’t able to walk for several days afterward.

The same report elaborated that Domi opted for his own surgeon instead of the one suggested by the team, which isn’t uncommon in professional sports. This decision raises some eyebrows, but then again, athletes often want to feel secure in their healthcare choices.

Commenting on the situation, a writer noted that the outcome of the surgery might not be favorable, describing Domi’s inability to walk for several days as a source of considerable anxiety. His status for the upcoming season remains uncertain.

Domi has been a consistent presence in Toronto’s roster since he joined the team on a one-year deal in 2023, later signing a multi-year contract. Throughout his three seasons with the Leafs, he has played at least 74 games each year.

Originally selected in the first round of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes, Domi had a notable performance last season, scoring 12 goals and accumulating 36 points in 80 games. He also reached a career-high of 72 points while playing for the Montreal Canadiens during the 2018-19 season.
