Cincinnati – Max Fried Makes History
Max Fried doesn’t need to look too far ahead.
The All-Star Game is just around the corner, set to take place in the city where he launched his major league journey, spending the first eight years of his career there.
On Wednesday night, the Yankees’ left-hander became the first pitcher to notch 10 wins this season, while lowering his ERA to an impressive 1.92.
Aaron Boone, who manages the American League team, is faced with the possibility of choosing Fried as a starting pitcher.
But Fried is, well, cautious.
“We have a few starts left before the All-Star break,” he noted, dodging the question of whether he might pitch in the big game in Atlanta. “Right now, I’m just focusing on the next one coming up in five or six days. I want to go out there, compete, and win.”
Boone had indicated earlier that the schedule might not align perfectly for Fried to take part in the All-Star Game. However, after a solid 7-1 victory over the Reds, he seemed to leave the door ajar.
“We’ll see as we go along,” Boone joked. “But I’ll keep pushing for it.”
Currently, Fried’s main competition for a starting spot comes from Tigers ace Tarix Cabal, who sits at 9-2 with an ERA of 2.29, and Astros ace Hunter Brown, boasting an 8-3 record with a 1.88 ERA.
For the moment, Fried is stepping up consistently, boasting an 8-1 record despite a tough season for the Yankees. In his recent performance, he allowed just one run, spread across four hits and a walk, while striking out seven batters.
Throughout his career, he’s made history as the first Yankees pitcher to reach 10 wins in a season since 1962, joining the ranks of CC Sabathia (2011) and Tommy John (1979).
“Achieving 10 wins in half a season isn’t easy, especially nowadays,” Boone remarked. “It shows how effective he has been. He’s been vital to our success.”
Fried also reflected on his recent outing, stating, “I felt I could adjust my speed effectively. I was able to keep my pitches down early on. I faced some long counts in the middle innings and had to battle through a bit, but it feels good to have such solid support from my defense and get the win.”
As the Yankees’ bullpen faced strain with 11 losses, Fried’s performance helped provide a necessary relief.
