Max Scherzer’s Rotation Spot in Jeopardy
Max Scherzer’s position in the Blue Jays’ starting lineup is becoming uncertain after yet another challenging outing on Friday, during which he faced multiple arm injuries. However, he is expected to be back on the field soon.
The 41-year-old is aiming for redemption this season after his team fell short in Game 7 of last year’s World Series. Unfortunately, his performance hasn’t been great lately, particularly in three of his last five starts.
In Friday’s match against Cleveland, he managed just 2 1/3 innings, surrendering six hits, seven runs, walking three batters, and giving up three home runs in an 8-6 loss.
To make matters worse, Scherzer didn’t record any strikeouts, having only struck out one player in his prior outing against the Diamondbacks.
“It’s really disappointing to lose like this. Everyone else in the clubhouse did their job,” Scherzer shared with reporters. “The offense fought hard, and the bullpen stepped up to cover some innings. It’s a tough loss. We’ll review the tape tomorrow and go back to work.”
The situation has become more urgent for the Blue Jays, especially with players like Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios, and Shane Bieber all nearing their return from injuries.
Yesavage might be back from his shoulder impingement as soon as this week when they face the Red Sox. After completing a stint with Triple-A Buffalo, he’s set to meet with the Blue Jays over the weekend to discuss his next steps.
Berrios (dealing with a right elbow stress fracture) is slated to start his rehab in Buffalo on Tuesday, although this could be his final chance. Bieber’s situation is less favorable; he’s expected to return in late May, but it seems his recovery will take a bit longer.
With a 9.64 ERA, Scherzer currently has the highest ERA in the Blue Jays’ rotation, making him a likely target for scrutiny.
This season, he has been battling forearm tendonitis but has insisted it isn’t responsible for his recent struggles. “No, I wouldn’t blame this start on the forearm,” Scherzer stated
