Ghislaine Maxwell’s Legal Team Seeks Protections for Congressional Testimony
Ghislaine Maxwell’s attorneys are requesting immunity and additional safeguards prior to her testifying before Congress. Attorney David Oscar Marx has made it clear that without assurance of immunity from prosecutors, Maxwell would likely need to invoke her Fifth Amendment rights to avoid self-incrimination.
A committee representative mentioned that they will respond to Maxwell’s lawyers soon, but it is unlikely they will consider granting her immunity for this testimony.
In a letter, Marx emphasized Maxwell’s willingness to cooperate, conditioned on the mentioned protections. He also suggested that her testimony be conducted after the Supreme Court rules on pending appeals, and that she should receive questions ahead of time for adequate preparation.
Marx’s letter highlighted concerns over a potential “public report” indicating that the committee might seek to question Maxwell while she is incarcerated, which he argued could jeopardize her legal standing in a politically sensitive environment.
He pointed out that her safety could be at risk due to possible leaks related to the testimony, which might damage the overall process’s integrity.
Additionally, Marx insisted that having questions in advance is crucial for preparing Maxwell’s responses accurately and fairly, given the complexity of the case and the extensive documentation involved. He argued that the proceedings should not resemble a “cat and mouse game.”
In his appeal, he called for President Donald Trump to intervene favorably on behalf of Maxwell, stating that she is eager to testify comprehensively and honestly if granted appropriate considerations.
Marx further claimed that Maxwell did not receive a fair trial and was wrongly convicted. He asserted that she has never been formally charged in ways that align with her current legal battles. He accused federal prosecutors of violating a 2008 non-prosecution agreement concerning Jeffrey Epstein when they pursued legal actions against her.
