Mayor and Attorney General clash over lawsuit against Trump's anti-crime initiative

Democratic Leaders Divided Over Trump’s Law Enforcement Surge

Democratic leaders in Washington, D.C. are showing division in response to President Donald Trump’s recent increase in law enforcement presence.

On Thursday, Attorney General Brian Schwarb (D) filed a lawsuit after the Trump administration sent thousands of national security forces to the capital.

“This lawsuit is just another attempt to weaken the President’s effective measures aimed at tackling violent crime in D.C.,” the complaint claims.

According to Schwarb, “Residents and leaders of D.C. did not ask for this. None of it is lawful.”

He further criticized Trump for “trampling over the very principle of American democracy—military involvement in civilian law enforcement is not acceptable.”

He added, “Cities shouldn’t have out-of-state troops who aren’t accountable to local authorities. Today it’s D.C.; tomorrow, it could be anywhere else. This lawsuit aims to stop this overreach.”

Schwarb also alleged that the National Guard was deployed without the approval of Mayor Muriel Bowser (D). Interestingly, Bowser had recently expressed gratitude toward the White House for helping reduce crime in the city.

“We appreciate the influx of support that enhances the efforts of our Metropolitan Police Department,” Bowser said at a press conference.

While acknowledging some decline in crime, she also pointed out that federal immigration agents and National Guard presence have not proven effective, leading to community members feeling “devastated” and “living in fear.”

The White House dismissed Schwarb’s lawsuit as a move aimed at undermining Trump’s actions. White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson stated, “President Trump is fully authorized to deploy the National Guard in D.C. to protect federal property and assist in law enforcement.” She called the lawsuit an attempt to hinder efforts to combat violent crime.
