Mayor Bass states that immigration raids are devastating LA businesses more than COVID did.

In a recent interview, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass discussed the effects of immigration-related issues on small businesses, particularly during the pandemic.

Her remarks came after a visit to Boyle Heights, an area with a significant Latino population. The mayor observed numerous vacant storefronts and noted that many residents felt too anxious to enjoy Father’s Day festivities.

“Mariachi Plaza was entirely deserted. It was eerily quiet,” Bass shared. “There was just one restaurant with a handful of customers; another one had no one at all.”

She pointed out that immigrant workers are vital to the city’s economy, especially in sectors like construction, retail, and dining. However, the ongoing immigration crackdowns have created a fearsome environment that is detrimental to local businesses.

Mayor Bass reflected on the situation, mentioning, “The uncertainty here is palpable, and it surely affects the economy. Walking down the street and seeing so many empty spaces—it brought back memories of the Covid lockdown.” During that time, Los Angeles faced some of the nation’s toughest restrictions, impacting everything from schools to public gatherings.

Business owners have expressed their struggles, with one restaurant operator reportedly telling Bass that the current environment had made it increasingly difficult for them to thrive. Assembly member Gonzalez recounted how the owner was visibly distressed over the implications for their livelihood.

Gonzalez recalled the owner’s despair, saying, “He couldn’t believe how empty things were. It’s not something anyone should have to experience.” The owner criticized the administration, noting the detrimental impact on local enterprises.

Recently, the Trump administration modified its immigration policy, suspending deportation raids in certain industries, yet reports indicate that operations in areas like farms, hotels, and restaurants would still occur. This shift appeared motivated by concerns that aggressive actions had negatively affected key sectors of the economy.

Protests erupted after a major immigration raid that included arrests of individuals with violent criminal records. The president responded by deploying the National Guard, a move criticized by some as a means of escalating tensions rather than addressing the underlying issues.

Within the protests, some individuals engaged in looting, targeting both large chains and local shops. Local business owners voiced their frustrations, urging for accountability from city leaders. “We’re fed up. It’s like there’s no one at the helm,” one owner expressed, highlighting the need for effective leadership amidst the chaos.
