Mayor Directs Flags to Full Staff After Charlie Kirk Assassination, Firefighters Decline

Aurora Mayor’s Controversial Flag Decision Amid Kirk’s Assassination

The Democratic mayor of Aurora, Illinois, John Lesh, has ordered that the city flags be flown at full staff. This decision comes despite earlier directives from President Donald Trump and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, as detailed in a memo circulating on social media.

Tyler Robinson has been arrested and accused of the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, during the organization’s “Proof: I’m Wrong” event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. President Trump had instructed that flags be flown at half-staff in Kirk’s honor, while Pritzker, on Friday, declared flags to be flown at half-staff to memorialize “victims of political violence,” without mentioning Kirk specifically.

Local sources in Aurora have confirmed the authenticity of the memo that was shared on social platforms. One tweet noted that the Aurora Linoy State Fire Station was directed by the mayor to display the flag at full staff, to which some firefighters reportedly objected.

In a memo, Fire Chief David McCabe stated, “All city buildings, including the fire department, must have their flags at full staff.” He acknowledged differing opinions on the flag’s position but emphasized that return to half-staff would be seen as a direct violation of the order.

According to additional sources, there seems to be a growing tension between the local firefighters’ union and the mayor’s office over this decision. One representative pointedly remarked that the mayor’s actions appeared politically motivated and insensitive to the prevailing national sentiments surrounding Kirk’s death.

In Trump’s declaration, flags were to be flown at half-staff until sunset on September 14th, a period that was later concluded by Pritzker’s announcement.

Mayor Lesh explained the rationale behind his action, stating: “Our focus was remembering the victims of September 11th. While some community members may not support this choice, lowering the flag is a solemn act.” Notably, Kirk hailed from the Chicago suburbs, a short drive from Aurora.

In a parallel situation, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass allowed flags to remain at full staff, disregarding directives from Iowa’s Republican Governor Kim Reynolds, who had ordered half-staff flags in Kirk’s honor.

Requests for comments from Mayor Laesch and Chief McCabe were not returned.
