Mayor Mamdani of NYC expresses his backing for ending ICE on 'The View'

NYC Mayor Advocates for Abolishing ICE on “The View”

On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani appeared on “The View” and expressed his support for abolishing ICE, or Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Co-host Alyssa Farrar Griffin prompted him by saying, “Mayor, given recent events, there are renewed calls from some Democrats to do away with ICE. What’s your stance on this, and do you think ICE plays a legitimate law enforcement role?”

“I support abolishing ICE, and here’s why,” Mamdani responded, earning applause from the audience. “We’re looking at an organization that seems more interested in instilling fear than enforcing immigration laws. Instead of upholding the law, this agency is terrorizing individuals, no matter their immigration status or the facts surrounding their cases.”

“Honestly, I’m exhausted from seeing videos every day of people being yanked from their cars, homes, and lives,” he added. “What we really need is compassion. There are humane ways to treat immigrants in this city and country, but what we’re seeing from ICE is far from that. They haven’t acted humanely in quite some time.”

Following a recent incident involving the death of Minnesota resident Renee Good, advocacy for defunding or eliminating ICE is growing. Good was reportedly shot and killed by an ICE officer, which has led to protests across the nation, highlighting calls for accountability or outright abolition of the agency. The Trump administration defended the actions of ICE, claiming the officers acted in self-defense during an incident where Good allegedly attempted to run them over.

The discussion around ICE has drawn sharp contrasts within the Democratic Party, particularly between moderates and progressives. Veteran strategist James Carville cautioned his party against calls for the agency’s abolition, signaling potential rifts ahead.

Meanwhile, co-host Whoopi Goldberg, who has been critical of ICE as well, endorsed Mamdani’s perspective. “It’s wonderful to have you here,” she remarked after his appearance. “What you’re saying resonates; you could help reshape not just a city but a nation.”

ICE did not provide an immediate comment following the mayor’s statements.
