Mayor’s Wife Apologizes for Controversial Tweets

The wife of socialist New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani, Rama Duwaji, has issued an apology for several controversial tweets she posted during her teenage years.

Discussing the matter in an interview featured in Hyperallergic magazine, she expressed her regret. “I’ve seen many reactions from others, and I understand the pain I have caused, and I am truly sorry,” she stated.

During the conversation, she also spoke about how being in the public eye has impacted her personally. Reflecting on her past, she said, “This experience has completely transformed my life. I’m still processing how it affects me both as an artist and as an individual, contemplating my future and my past.” She added, “When an old tweet resurfaced recently, I felt immense shame over the hurtful language I used. Being 15 doesn’t excuse it.”

She reiterated her remorse: “I have read and seen many of the responses from others and I truly apologize for the hurt I caused.”

In March, a report by the Washington Free Beacon surfaced detailing her anti-Israel posts, which included messages that appeared to support Palestinian terrorism and criticized U.S. military actions as “imperialist wars.” Other messages reportedly involved the use of homophobic and racial slurs.

When the mayor was asked about the situation, he noted that his wife is “an individual who does not hold any position in my campaign or at City Hall.”

Interestingly, while Dowaj has apologized for her past tweets, she has not commented on reports suggesting she “liked” a post that supported Hamas’ recent attacks on Israel.

She emphasized her focus on her art, rather than pursuing public recognition. “I’m here to work with care and responsibility, allowing my art to speak for itself,” she said.

Duwaji, a Syrian-American artist originally from Texas, met Mayor Mamdani on the dating app Hinge in 2021, and they were married in 2025.
