Washington, D.C. Mayor Enacts Youth Curfew

Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, D.C., announced a “limited youth curfew” that will remain in effect until November 5. This decision follows what she describes as “weeks of disorderly behavior by juveniles.”

In a post on X, Bowser clarified that the curfew applies to those under 18, setting hours from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. The announcement took place after a significant number of teenagers were involved in disturbances and blocked traffic in the Navy Yard area on Friday.

“We have a limited youth curfew in place in Washington, D.C.,” Bowser stated. “Effective immediately, all youth under the age of 18 are subject to a curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., lasting until November 5.”

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) reported that teens began congregating near the Navy Yard subway station around 7:30 p.m., and within half an hour, the number had swelled to “several hundred.” Initially, the gathering was described as peaceful, but according to reports, it quickly turned chaotic as fights broke out and traffic was disrupted.

The police noted that while the gathering started without incident, it rapidly devolved as altercations ensued and many refused to stay on the sidewalks. To restore order, additional law enforcement, including Metro Transit Police and National Guard members, were deployed.

By around 11 p.m., police managed to clear the park and guided many youths into the subway station, maintaining a strong presence throughout the night to prevent any further disruptions.

As a result of the incident, four teenagers from Washington, D.C., and an 18-year-old from Maryland were arrested.

In light of the curfew order, police have indicated that restrictions will also be enforced in other key areas, including the U Street Corridor and Union Station.

Police Chief Pamela A. Smith expressed concern over the events at the Navy Yard, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable. She mentioned that there would be an increased law enforcement presence to avoid similar situations in the future.

“The conduct displayed at the Navy Yard last night is unacceptable,” Smith stated, highlighting that the gathering was not organized by official events in the area.
