Backlash over Chappell’s Interaction with Fan

A recent encounter involving singer Chappell has ruffled feathers among Brazilian officials after a reported incident occurred while he was in Sao Paulo for Lollapalooza Brazil.

Soccer player Jorginho Frello claimed that while Chappell was having breakfast at a hotel, he instructed a security guard to address his daughter. This interaction drew attention from Rio de Janeiro’s mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, who publicly stated that Chappell would not perform in his city again.

Cavaliere’s statement on social media made it clear that as long as he held the position, Chappell would not be welcome to perform. He expressed disbelief at the situation and mentioned that Jorginho’s daughter was honored by his organization.

Chappell, 28, took to Instagram Stories to share his side of events. He described the situation as “very upsetting” and denied having any contact with fans earlier that day. According to him, he didn’t notice anyone, including women or children, and expressed doubt that anyone cared about him during his breakfast.

He clarified that he hadn’t asked security to approach anyone and seemed puzzled by the backlash, stating, “I don’t hate people who are fans of my music.” His feeling was that it was unfortunate if someone felt uncomfortable based on assumptions.

In his own Instagram post, Jorginho noted that his family had been through a distressing experience with Chappell before the festival. He described how his wife and daughter, who were excited to potentially meet an artist they admired, felt let down. His daughter merely walked past and smiled, but, as Jorginho recounted, she was never close enough to interact personally.

After the encounter, a large security guard reportedly approached Jorginho’s family in a forceful manner, accusing them of disrespecting Chappell. Jorginho expressed bewilderment over how simply passing by could be considered harassment, particularly as his daughter ended up crying amid the confrontation.

He concluded by discussing the importance of fans to artists, suggesting that no one, especially a child, should endure such treatment. His hope is that this incident prompts some reflection within the industry about fan engagement.
