Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City reveals free child care programs for undocumented immigrants

New Child Care Program in NYC Announced by Mayor Mamdani

On January 24, 2026, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani unveiled a new free child care initiative aimed at all qualifying children, regardless of their immigration status. During the announcement, he expressed pride in the city’s identity as a “city of immigrants.”

Critics immediately weighed in on the plan, with some arguing that allowing noncitizens to access taxpayer-funded services might burden city finances and raise fairness concerns among residents. Mamdani, however, clarified that no immigration status checks would be conducted, implying that the program would specifically support children who may be in the country illegally.

This initiative, named Universal Child Care Expansion, aims to prioritize access in 3-K and pre-K programs, with a focus on underserved areas first. The rollout will happen in phases, and applications for the next school year are already open.

“We have a long-standing policy in place in this city that denies ICE agents access to schools and city properties unless they have a judicial warrant,” Mamdani noted.

The mayor emphasized the city’s commitment to providing preschool for every family, stating, “We are proud to be a city of immigrants. This effort reflects the beautiful mosaic that is New York.” He referenced the approach taken by former Mayor David Dinkins, highlighting a community-focused philosophy encouraging all families to apply.

Moreover, he reminded citizens of protections against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within the boroughs, reaffirming that agents cannot enter specific locations without proper authorization.

This announcement comes in the wake of a troubling incident involving ICE, which recently faced backlash after detaining a 5-year-old boy and his father in Minnesota. The father was accused of abandoning his child during the arrest, raising serious concerns about the treatment of immigrant families.
