Mayor Zohran Mamdani to support Gov. Kathy Hochul in her 2026 re-election campaign

Mayor Mamdani to Endorse Gov. Hochul

ALBANY – New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani is set to announce his endorsement of Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul’s reelection campaign ahead of the party’s nominating convention on Friday, sources informed The Post.

There had been some uncertainty about Mamdani’s stance on supporting the moderate governor, particularly given their recent political interactions.

This endorsement marks a significant moment for the progressive wing of the party, showcasing a supportive alignment with Hochul, who represents the Establishment Democrats.

Insiders expect Mamdani to make his announcement before Hochul is officially recognized at the nominating convention in Syracuse.

The relatively unknown, leftist city legislator surprised many by defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary for mayor last June.

Hochul had backed him during the November general election, further intertwining their political paths.

This latest development is a notable advancement in the budding relationship between Mamdani and Hochul.

However, Mamdani will require state approval for several of his progressive policy objectives. Recently, Hochul’s team expressed frustration over his proposals, particularly his call for increases in income taxes to address a substantial budget deficit in the city.

Republicans have criticized Hochul for backing Mamdani, expecting this issue to become a focal point in upcoming elections across New York and beyond.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, anticipated to be Hochul’s Republican challenger, commented that “nothing surprises me” considering Hochul’s prior endorsement of Adrian Adams, whom he described as a “pro-crime, anti-business, pro-tax-and-spend candidate” for the lieutenant governor position.

This decision also seems to overlook Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado, who is trying to secure support among progressives for a primary challenge to his former running mate.

Delgado stated, “I’m focused on the needs of New Yorkers who are struggling with out-of-control health insurance premiums, high utility bills, and rising rents. Oh, and taxes on the wealthy, too.”
