Concerns Raised Over Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Treatment of Firefighters
New York’s Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani has faced criticism from various groups, including the Smoke Eaters, regarding his record as a state legislator. Critics argue he has consistently undermined New Yorkers, especially in his approach to fire safety.
Queens Councilman Nicholas Spinelli, who also leads the West Hamilton Beach Fire Department, expressed disappointment at Mamdani’s perceived indifference to firefighters and other first responders since he assumed office in 2021 while vying to be the Democratic mayoral candidate.
It’s disheartening, I think, that lawmakers in Queens have continually declined to support a resolution that designates May 4th as “Volunteer Firefighters’ Day.” This annual resolution, as Spinelli pointed out, should be a no-brainer, yet it’s met with resistance.
Bringing Mamdani’s left-leaning policies to City Hall may worsen emergency response times, something he’s already accused of neglecting.
“It seems like he’s completely overlooking public safety,” Spinelli added.
Mamdani was one of the few Congressional Democrats to oppose a law aimed at establishing a task force for recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters in New York. In 2023, he voted against a significant proposal that included $25 million intended for volunteer fire stations, along with another $10 million for equipment and training support—a budget allocation that ultimately passed regardless.
The city boasts eight volunteer fire stations, including the storied Richmond Engine 1, which has been around for 123 years in Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Queens.
Critics, including Spinelli, also referenced a satirical video from 2021 featuring Senator Jamari Brisport, who advocates for statewide socialized healthcare.
Criticism of Mamdani Continues to Mount
In a controversial 2021 video, both lawmakers donned FDNY uniforms, portraying indifferent firefighters failing to address a nearby blaze due to lack of proper documentation.
“Mamdani’s attitude toward firefighters is simply unacceptable,” commented Joanne Ariola, the council’s minority leader. “It’s troubling for political figures to mock our first responders while simultaneously voting against measures to support them.”
Mamdani has also faced backlash for his refusal to sign multiple resolutions this year related to support for volunteer firefighters, including one recognizing Israel’s 77th anniversary.
“Zohran deeply appreciates the men and women of the FDNY and their courageous public service, rushing toward danger when others flee,” a spokesperson said regarding his campaign. “He aims to make New York City safer and more affordable for all.”
Yet, it’s worth noting that the campaign has not directly addressed the mounting criticisms over Mamdani’s lack of support for volunteer firefighters.
