Mayoral candidate Mamdani reconsiders stance on arms for Hamas during debate

Debate Highlights Zoran Mamdani’s Position on Hamas

Zoran Mamdani, the New York mayoral candidate from the Socialist Party, seemed to walk back his prior stance regarding Hamas during a debate held Thursday evening. In a discussion featuring former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa, Mamdani remarked, “Of course they believe they should lay down their weapons.”

This comment came after the debate host characterized his earlier response to Fox News anchor Martha McCallum as “confused.” Mamdani had been hesitant when asked about whether Hamas should cease its armed activities and cede its governance in Gaza, in line with a cease-fire agreement.

“I don’t have a strong opinion on what the future holds for Hamas and Israel, other than concerns regarding justice and security,” he explained, emphasizing that both parties must adhere to international law.

Mamdani took pride in being among the first state legislators advocating for a ceasefire, insisting that “a ceasefire means a ceasefire.” He stressed that all sides need to halt hostilities, not only to end violence but also to ensure the flow of humanitarian aid. “Like many New Yorkers, I hope this ceasefire will be upheld,” he added.

He expressed a desire for the ceasefire negotiated by President Trump to be both “lasting” and “fair.”

Following Mamdani’s remarks, social media users referred to his statement as a “new answer.” In a previous interview, he mentioned that it was premature to credit President Trump with the peace deal.

Sliwa, the only candidate to directly refer to Trump in relation to the Israeli hostages release, challenged Mamdani on his position during the debate. He argued, “Zoran Mamdani and Andrew Cuomo should have acknowledged the president’s role.” Mamdani faced significant scrutiny recently for his views on Israel, including his hesitance to renounce the term “globalizing the intifada.”

“I want to clarify,” Mamdani stated during the debate. “This occupation is an infringement on international law, yet Mr. Cuomo seems to overlook this while supporting Prime Minister Netanyahu’s legal team amidst this crisis.”
