Mayoral candidate Nitha Raman's views on homeless camps close to schools

Los Angeles Mayoral Candidate Booed Over Homeless Camp Comments

Nitya Raman, a candidate for mayor in Los Angeles, faced boos during her speech regarding homeless encampments close to schools. This incident drew attention due to her surprising stance on the issue.

A member of the Democratic Socialists of America, she appeared unconcerned when questioned about her support for families affected by homelessness. Raman contended that strict enforcement of a law preventing individuals from being within 500 feet of schools and child care centers isn’t as crucial as some might think.

During a recent meeting with the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association, she stated, “I don’t think being 10 feet or 500 feet away from a school is going to make kids any safer.” Footage showed her rolling her eyes and putting down the microphone as the audience reacted with visible discontent.

This was not the first time Raman garnered attention for controversial remarks, having previously made headlines for a bizarre accusation against Toyota regarding catalytic converter thefts.

Candidates for mayor often have a history of opposing urban planning initiatives. Currently, Los Angeles has a camping ban law that restricts sitting or sleeping within certain distances from sensitive areas, including schools and parks.

Raman has voiced her disapproval of potential amendments to this policy, claiming it merely shifts the problem from one area to another without offering real solutions.

She remarked in a City Council meeting, “We can’t just snap our fingers, enact a law and pretend we can end homelessness,” emphasizing that this tactic lacks the necessary resources.

Parents in Los Angeles are increasingly worried that lax enforcement of these laws has significant consequences for their children. Many have expressed concerns about children encountering open drug use, erratic behavior, and obstacles on their way to school.

Anxiety has reportedly increased among parents and children alike. Some have had to adjust their travel routines or drive short distances due to safety fears. Children have been seen grappling with challenging questions related to what they witness—everything from distressing behaviors to public nudity and drug use.

Several parents noted that incidents such as overdoses and fires near schools have left a lasting emotional impact on their children, with fears making simple commutes sources of anxiety.

“There are no teachable moments in situations like that,” one parent reflected, highlighting how such exposure alters a child’s sense of safety.

Currently, Raman sits in second place in the mayoral race, holding 17% of the vote, while incumbent Karen Bass leads with 25%. The publication reached out to her office for comments regarding her evolving views on the city’s anti-camping law as she continues her campaign.
