Mayorkas Won’t Commit to Not Using More Money for Catch and Release to Get ‘Needed’ Funds

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on Thursday's broadcast of Fox News Channel's “Special Report” that the Department of Homeland Security needs more funding, but that the money cannot be used to release migrants. He did not say whether he would accept the terms. The country raises the “necessary'' funds.

host Brett Baier asked. [relevant exchange begins around 7:10] “But Mr. Secretary, you now have a court date until 2031. You are talking about it. But to say that Republicans won't accept additional funding is because that funding is tied to the release of illegal immigrants. That's because there is a problem with it being used for deportations across the United States. So Congress is now listening. Accepting additional funds on the condition that the funds can only be used for detention and deportation, and not for release into the country. Could you please give me one?”

Mr. Mayorkas said, “Brett, we need funding to add more Border Patrol agents to the Department of Homeland Security. This funding is needed to provide the Department of Homeland Security with more technology. is necessary to provide the Department of Justice with detention space and provide the Department of Justice with more immigration judges so that it can more quickly administer justice, and to eliminate the six-year gap between the time of contact and final judgment. This is necessary to prevent this from occurring.”
