Rep.-elect Sarah McBride (D-Delaware), the first transgender person elected to Congress, said Sunday that House Republicans' bathroom ban is an “attempt to distract from what they're actually doing.” .
Appearing on CBS News' “Face the Nation” with anchor Margaret Brennan, McBride said, “Every time I hear the incoming administration and Republicans in Congress talk about the vulnerable people in this country, it's an attempt. We have to make one thing clear.” To distract myself. ”
“This is an attempt to distract from what they're actually doing. Every time I hear them say the word 'trans,' I look at what they're doing with their right hand. Please,” she continued.
Earlier this week, Rep. Nancy Mace (RS.C.) introduced a bill aimed at banning transgender people from accessing Capitol facilities that match their gender identity. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) subsequently announced a new policy that would prohibit transgender people from using the Capitol restroom that matches their gender identity.
Mr Johnson previously said: “All single-sex facilities, including restrooms, locker rooms and dressing rooms, in Parliament House and the House of Commons Office Building are reserved for individuals of that biological sex.” “It is important to note that each member's office has its own restroom, and unisex restrooms are available throughout Parliament House.”
“I'm already having conversations with my colleagues in the Democratic caucus about how the party should approach all issues,” McBride said Sunday.
“But I think we are united in that all Americans are entitled to equal rights. Any attempt to attack vulnerable communities is not only mean-spirited, but actually misguided. “I think we're all united in that this is an attempt to,” she added.
Mace later announced a bill that would ban transgender people from accessing restrooms in federal buildings that correspond to their gender identity.
Hill has reached out to Mace and Johnson's offices, the Republican National Committee, the House Republican Conference and Trump's transition team for comment.
