McDonald's commits $8.5 billion to support franchisees in upgrading their operations

McDonald’s Unveils Growth Strategy at Investor Day

On Wednesday, McDonald’s shared fresh updates regarding its long-term growth plan during an investor day event at its Chicago headquarters. The fast-food titan had first revealed its NEXT growth and productivity strategy back in June and has since detailed the adjustments it aims to make across its operations.

The company plans to accelerate the modernization of its restaurants and enhance training for staff. With this in mind, McDonald’s intends to allocate approximately $8.5 billion in NEXT partnering support to its franchisees through 2036, with around $5 billion being disbursed by 2030. This support will include various forms of capital assistance and rent reductions.

The franchisee support is aimed at achieving about 250 basis points of improvement in restaurant-level efficiency, which is expected to translate into roughly $100,000 in annual cash flow benefits for the average location. McDonald’s asserts that a significant portion of these improvements will positively impact the overall profitability of its restaurants over time.

The announcement highlighted that the restaurant aspect of the plan is designed to enhance growth and productivity. This will be achieved through simplifying operations, improving execution standards, updating restaurant designs, and scaling up the use of generative AI-enabled tools like ArchIQ.

In addition, McDonald’s has introduced a new multi-year training initiative named “Make it Golden,” which will kick off on Founder’s Day, October 5. The goal of this program is to refine customer service and ensure a more consistent experience for diners, encouraging them to return.

Chris Kempczinski, the CEO of McDonald’s, remarked, “We have the unique ability to not just adapt to the upcoming changes in our industry but to leverage them to our advantage. That’s essentially what McDonald’s > NEXT is about: establishing ourselves as the first choice for customers more frequently, while simultaneously fortifying our restaurants and streamlining operations.”

McDonald’s is also setting ambitious market share goals, targeting an additional 1.5 percentage points growth in both the chicken and beverage sectors by 2030. At the same time, the company aims to maintain its leading position in the beef market.

Moreover, the company is looking to achieve a nearly 2.5% contribution to system-wide sales growth from unit expansion by 2027, with expectations for it to moderate to about 2% by 2030.
