McDonald’s Worker Suffers Serious Burns in Random Attack

A 20-year-old McDonald’s employee, Jacob Smith, is enduring “excruciating” pain after suffering second-degree burns from a shocking incident where a co-worker threw hot oil at him. This unexpected attack left Smith with severe burns on his face, neck, arms, and back, leading to over a week in intensive care.

The alleged assailant, 23-year-old Jalani Blewett, reportedly fled the scene and was initially missing before being arrested several days later. It’s unclear what drove Blewett to commit such an act, as police have not disclosed a motive for the attack.

“What should have been a normal job turned into a nightmare,” said Smith’s mother, Amber, in an online fundraising effort for her son. She recalled how Jacob was preparing to count money when, out of nowhere, hot oil poured down on him. Her heart sank, she shared, as he looked at her in disbelief asking, “Why are you doing this to me?”

As of Sunday, the fundraising campaign is still several hundred dollars short of its $22,000 target, meant to assist with medical and living expenses while Jacob remains unable to work. Amber expressed the difficulty of managing her son’s pain, noting that he requires a level of medication that isn’t possible outside the ICU.

Doctors are working diligently to reduce the extent of Jacob’s burns to avoid the need for skin grafts. Meanwhile, Blewett, who was considered a “risk” due to his vulnerabilities, is held in Sutter County Jail without bail, facing multiple felony charges, including assault causing serious bodily injury.

Amber Smith is calling for justice, hoping for stiff consequences for Blewett’s actions. “I don’t wish him harm; I just want him to grasp the impact of what he did,” she said. “The pain he’s caused my son is unbearable.”
