Measles case confirmed in Maryland resident who recently travelled abroad

Maryland residents who have recently travelled internationally have been confirmed to have a measles case.

Maryland Department of Health and Howard County Health Authority announcement On Sunday, a recent international traveler was confirmed to be infected.

The incident was not related to the current outbreak of measles in Texas and New Mexico.

“From the abundant attention, health officials are coordinating efforts to identify potentially exposed people, including contracting potentially exposed passengers on certain flights,” the official said.

The department said anyone who was at Washington Dulles International Airport in Terminal A to the transport and baggage billing area between March 5th and 9pm could be exposed.

People could have been exposed if they were also in the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center's Pediatric Emergency Department on March 7th from 3:30 to 7:30pm

Early symptoms include fevers above 101 degrees, runny nose, cough and red eyes. A person experiences a red rash 1-4 days after the early symptoms.

A massive outbreak in West Texas killed two people, marking the first death of American measles in 10 years. State health officials in Texas say hundreds of thousands of people in the San Antonio area may have been exposed.

Measles is a highly contagious virus. This is because one infected person could infect nine out of 10 people they have come into contact with.
