A man has been accused of breaking into a Michigan home and sexually assaulting two young girls, but despite the seriousness of the crime, many media outlets believe the suspect in the case is in the U.S. illegally. trying to hide the fact that
In the early morning hours of March 20, a man reportedly broke into a home in the Sweet Lake manufactured home and camping resort community near Sturgis in southwest Michigan. While there, he allegedly sexually assaulted two girls, both under the age of 13.
The vehicle in which the suspect fled was captured on surveillance camera footage, and police later located him. But the man fled the area before he could be questioned, leading to a large-scale investigation involving local, county and state police in Michigan and Indiana, as well as federal agencies such as ICE, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. A search was conducted.
About a week after the vicious assault, the 25-year-old suspect was arrested in Fort Wayne, Indiana, about an hour south of the attack scene. The man was charged with first-degree burglary and two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.
He was also placed in immigration detention because he is Mexican and at one point illegally entered the United States.
However, even if you want to know about this incident, those who have the habit of only reading the headlines may be missing important facts. Below is a list of headlines about this incident that came up after a basic internet search.
All four articles refer to the suspect as a “25-year-old Sturgis man.” Two of the four withheld information about the men’s immigration status until almost the end of their articles.
In the following short news segment, immigration is not mentioned until the last three seconds.

1 local outlet, WWMT A newspaper out of Kalamazoo headlined that an “illegal immigrant” had been arrested in connection with the incident. His first two paragraphs also provided details about immigration.
St. Joseph County Deputy Sheriff Jason Bingaman similarly addressed this information at a press conference, saying, “My understanding is that he appears to be in the country illegally.”
The suspect’s name has not yet been released. This incident is still under investigation.
The sexual assault of the Sturgis girl is just the latest high-profile crime in Michigan allegedly involving an illegal immigrant. Late last month, another undocumented immigrant, Brandon Ortiz Vito, 25, allegedly killed Ruby Garcia, 25, of Grand Rapids.
Police also believe that a Chilean crime syndicate is responsible for a series of robberies in some wealthy suburbs of Detroit. However, these suspects are not technically illegal immigrants because they entered the country under the federal government’s Visa Waiver Program.
