Media downplay LA riots, highlight 'peaceful' anti-ICE demonstrations

Recent Riots in Los Angeles Spark Media Debate

In recent days, there’s been a significant push from mainstream media to downplay the unrest that erupted in Los Angeles following ICE actions aimed at undocumented immigrants. This has drawn a mix of reactions from various news personalities.

ABC7 Los Angeles anchor Jollyland has cautioned law enforcement against escalating tensions through interruptions in managing riot situations. She warned that mismanagement could lead to further instability, as people gather to witness conflicts between police and protesters. This situation may sometimes be seen as “entertaining” to those at a distance.

Amidst the chaos, CNN media analyst Brian Stelter has attempted to minimize the riots. He noted that while anxiety is palpable, it hasn’t completely overtaken the city. “Most Angelenos are going about their regular lives,” he remarked, referencing misinformation as the unrest continues.

In a recent statement, Stelter urged viewers to be cautious about content on social media platforms. He emphasized that many videos circulating online could be outdated, potentially giving a misleading impression of the current situation.

Furthermore, LA-based comedian Jimmy Kimmel echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that claims of chaos were exaggerated. He mentioned that people with mental health challenges were mischaracterizing the scene, implying that the actual account of events was more subdued than reported.

NBC’s correspondent Jacob Soborov acknowledged incidents of civil unrest and looting, yet emphasized that such events are not widespread. “It’s essential to clarify that this is not a repeat of previous emergencies in LA. The National Guard’s presence is meant to maintain order,” he mentioned on “Morning Joe.”

Adding to the narrative, another NBC colleague highlighted how parts of LA—like Santa Monica—are largely unaffected by the protests, which are concentrated in specific areas. “Law enforcement can handle this,” she stated, contrasting the portrayal of chaos by authorities.

The New Yorker depicted the protests humorously in a political cartoon, contrasting seriousness with a light-hearted take on the situation. Meanwhile, The New York Times noted that life in LA had managed to continue amidst the turmoil, with many peaceful demonstrations occurring alongside unrest.

On “The View,” Whoopi Goldberg shared that conversations with residents revealed that protests remained orderly despite being concentrated in small areas. She pointedly addressed, “There’s no crisis here that ICE didn’t cause.”

Sunny Hostin, also from “The View,” took a different angle, arguing that ICE actions have created a crisis in the city, albeit noting that protests were generally peaceful.

On Tuesday, Kimmel remarked on what he views as a media-driven hype around the riots. He accused coverage of sensationalizing minor incidents and criticized the federal response as overblown compared to past local crises that received little attention.
