The left-wing advocacy group Media Matters for America is funded by some of the nation's largest Democratic megadonors, according to a new report.
The Washington Free Beacon reported Thursday that Media Matters, a liberal nonprofit group, named some of its biggest donors in a November filing with the New Mexico Attorney General's Office. It was reported that it may have been “incorrectly” identified.
Media Matters' biggest donor is Deborah Simon of shopping mall giant Simon Property Group, who donated $4 million to the nonprofit, according to filings obtained by the Free Beacon. As noted by the Free Beacon, Simon has been outspoken in his pledge to defeat former President Trump ahead of the 2020 presidential election, and since 2018 he has spoken out in conjunction with various Democratic campaigns and movements. It has donated $53 million.

The next largest donation to Media Matters came from the Gill Foundation, which gave nearly $3 million, according to the form. The foundation is run by Tim Gill, a technology entrepreneur and gay rights activist who is a major power player in Colorado Democratic politics.
Other top donors include the Stephen Silverstein Foundation, the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, and Bain Capital co-chairman Joshua Bekenstein and his wife Anita, all with 175 million yen, according to the Free Beacon. They have donated between 10,000 and 1.9 million dollars.

Media Matters was founded in 2004 by Democratic activist and staunch Clinton ally David Bullock. Since its founding, Media Matters has built a reputation for organizing pressure campaigns against opposing conservative voices, including boycott movements.
Bullock left Media Matters in 2022 to assist President Biden against House Republicans in Congressional investigations into Democrats.

Critics have accused Media Matters of achieving tax-exempt status despite being an overtly political group. In 2020, the company received a federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan of “$1 million to $2 million” from the Trump administration, despite the company's continued criticism of President Trump's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including the PPP. He became the subject of ridicule.
Media Matters made headlines in the fall for its war with X owner Elon Musk. The group released a report alleging that ads from major companies including IBM, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate and Paramount were displayed with anti-Semitic content, prompting them to remove the ads from their platforms. .
