Trump Administration Targets Government Waste in Health Care

The Trump administration is intensifying efforts to address government waste and misuse, specifically focusing on the billions spent on healthcare for undocumented immigrants. Alongside this, new work requirements for able-bodied individuals on Medicaid are being introduced.

During a White House press briefing, Dr. Oz, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), laid out a robust plan to eliminate what he referred to as “legalized money laundering.” He cautioned that the current healthcare program could cost an additional $5.4 trillion over the next decade.

Dr. Oz pointed out that the government has reportedly identified around $2 billion in federal tax dollars that are being misappropriated to undocumented immigrants—a sum that has apparently doubled since his previous comments on the subject last year.

He specifically mentioned California, indicating that CMS has informed the state it owes $2 billion to the federal government, of which half has already been recouped. He noted, “Before this administration, California’s Medicaid program offered full dental and vision benefits to its enrollees. While I support those benefits, we don’t extend them to Medicare patients. So it seems only fair that we reevaluate this as a nation.”

Dr. Oz added, “The taxpayers of New Mexico and Mississippi, regardless of their political affiliations, end up footing the bill for benefits that many believe should not be available to undocumented immigrants in a state as large as California.”

New Work Requirements for Medicaid Recipients

In addition to reducing funding for undocumented immigrants, the administration is also reforming Medicaid by introducing work requirements. Under the new guidelines, able-bodied recipients will need to either work at least 20 hours a week, volunteer, or pursue education to qualify for free healthcare.

Dr. Oz emphasized that it’s common for many able-bodied individuals on Medicaid to spend around 6.1 hours a day just watching television. He described the new requirements as a “path to prosperity,” aiming to restore Medicaid’s original purpose from 1965.

He argued that individuals who benefit from government support should be obligated to participate in society if they are capable of doing so. “If you can work, then do so,” he urged. “By establishing guardrails around these programs, we can help them function effectively. I’m here because I care about Medicaid, and our president feels the same way. We need to avoid letting these essential programs descend into chaos. To preserve them, we must be willing to make tough decisions.”
