Importance of Reviewing Medicare Coverage Annually
With potential changes to Medicare plans and prescription drug coverage that could impact out-of-pocket expenses, experts emphasize the necessity for recipients to reassess their options each year.
Eileen Bradshaw from LIFE Senior Services discussed the significance of reviewing Medicare coverage during a recent segment on News On 6 at Noon. She elaborated on how the organization assists seniors in navigating this process.
Why is Medicare Open Enrollment Important for Seniors?
Bradshaw noted, “You only get one chance to really take advantage of it.” Open enrollment provides Medicare recipients the opportunity to evaluate their coverage, especially their Part D prescription drug plans, and make necessary changes.
Even if a plan has been effective in the past, coverage can change unexpectedly for the following year. She pointed out, “Your pharmacy company could switch, or your Medicare provider might alter the drugs they cover. They don’t always inform you, and you may only discover it when you go to the pharmacy in January, and suddenly your medications are much more expensive.”
To avoid those surprises, Bradshaw recommends that individuals examine their Medicare coverage each year.
How Can LIFE Senior Services Help with Medicare Enrollment?
LIFE Senior Services provides assistance to Medicare recipients needing help in comparing plans and understanding their choices. According to Bradshaw, “Medicare is complicated, and many don’t realize it until they’re actually enrolled.”
The organization aids seniors in comparing traditional Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and prescription drug plans according to their medications and medical requirements. Importantly, LIFE Senior Services does not accept commissions from insurance companies, which allows them to offer impartial advice.
Who Qualifies for Medicare Enrollment Assistance?
All individuals enrolled in Medicare can seek help from LIFE Senior Services. Appointments are necessary, and assistance is available both in person and over the phone.
Bradshaw explained that in-person consultations allow staff to walk recipients through their options visually, while phone appointments cater to those who may have trouble getting to the office.
What Other Services Does LIFE Senior Services Offer?
Beyond Medicare enrollment assistance, the organization provides ongoing Medicare education, particularly for first-time enrollees. Other services include adult day health programs, educational initiatives, volunteer opportunities, and transportation for medical appointments.
LIFE Senior Services also produces Vintage Magazine and manages a senior center with activities like line dancing, pickleball, and mahjong. Membership fees for the senior center are $100 annually.
“There’s no reason for anyone to feel isolated or bored at home,” Bradshaw commented.
Additionally, they offer transportation to medical appointments at little to no cost, depending on circumstances.
How Can Seniors Get Help?
Medicare recipients interested in enrollment assistance can reach out to LIFE Senior Services to schedule an appointment. Bradshaw encourages friends and family to assist seniors who may need help.
“If you’re a senior or know someone who is, whether it’s a neighbor or a relative, don’t hesitate to reach out to us before things get too overwhelming. We might be able to help,” she said.
