What happens when a person’s personal beliefs directly put them in violation of the law?
That’s the question that Texas surgeon Dr. Eisan Haim was forced to confront last year when he discovered some disturbing information about Texas Children’s Hospital, where he was doing his residency.
Despite the facility promising to stop providing transgender medical care to minors after Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton passed laws that deemed sex transition and puberty blockers for minors “child abuse,” Heim discovered that medical staff continued to provide services in secret.
He subsequently became a courageous whistleblower, but being a whistleblower also requires providing evidence, in this case medical records, but sharing sensitive medical information is a violation of HIPAA.
Heim ultimately decided the risk was worth it, and provided medical records to conservative journalist Christopher Rufo proving the hospital’s continued transgender medical care to minors.
Dr. Heim is currently being charged with four counts of violating HIPAA.

“I appreciate what you’re doing,” Glenn said, praising Haim not only for his courage in speaking out but also for his willingness to dip into his savings and retirement funds to pay for legal fees and ultimately to protect his children.
“[My wife and I] “We had to make a decision,” he told Glenn, “do we fight back, or succumb to ideology and try to erase it all? We knew we would have children someday. If this world didn’t have men and women ready to sacrifice to give their children a better future, what kind of world would we be sending them into?”
“We have sacrificed a lot, everything we have, but what we have gotten back is so much more,” he said, noting that his wife is currently pregnant with their first child.
“you [children] “To live a good and fulfilling life, you need to have virtues,” Heim said, but “this government has made those virtues into a crime. Our justice system protects criminals who prey on the innocent. Our health system creates disease to prey on the healthy. Our education system miseducates people. It’s as if every system is doing the opposite of what it’s supposed to do,” Heim laments. “People like us have to do something, even if it means making sacrifices.”
