Megachurch pastor Robert Morris has resigned from his position at Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, following a frightening confession.
In his own words, Morris admitted to engaging in “inappropriate sexual conduct with a young woman.”
But the “young woman” was only 12 years old at the time, and her accuser, Cindy Klemischer, revealed what Morris did to her in 1982 in a post on the church watchdog website Wartburg Watch.
Klemischer is now 54 years old.
“Pay close attention to the statement that he confessed to ‘inappropriate sexual activity with a young woman,’ implying that this was some kind of consensual interaction with a woman, which is not what happened.” Allie Beth Stuckey I say, shaken.
Morris also claimed he resigned from his previous position in 1987 to undergo counselling and was pardoned and reinstated to the pastorate.
Cremischer said Morris first assaulted her when he was 21 and a married traveling preacher with a young son. The abuse continued for more than four years.
Morris had become close with her family, and one night he allegedly asked her to lie on her back and then performed inappropriate acts on her. The sexual misconduct escalated over the course of several years to digital rape, after which Morris attempted to have sex with her on multiple occasions.
Ms. Cremischer originally tried to sue Morris in 2005, when his lawyers suggested she had been “cheating” on him and then offered him $25,000 if she signed a non-disclosure agreement, but she refused.
“He may have moved on from it and never done it again,” Stuckey said. “That’s extremely unusual in these pedophile sexual abuse stories. Extremely, extremely unusual.”
“I hope that’s true. I hope there are no other victims. It may be true that he turned from his sins after that and never sinned again. Please God I hope that’s true,” she continued, adding, “But true repentance in this case would also have included justice through the law.”
