Megan Rapinoe criticizes Trump and ICE for their actions on immigration enforcement

Former US soccer star Megan Rapinoe has openly criticized US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Trump administration following the fatal shooting of a woman in Minneapolis last week.

The Department of Homeland Security stated that an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Nicole Good in what they described as “self-defense.” According to reports, Good drove her car toward the agent after attempting to block ICE operations by following agents to multiple locations.

The incident has led to protests in Minneapolis, with demonstrators clashing with federal officers. Rapinoe discussed her concerns in a recent episode of her show, expressing discontent with the White House’s approach to immigration enforcement.

“I think what we’re seeing is just a continuation of this trend that’s been going on throughout the Trump administration,” she remarked. “It’s like they’re trying to silence people, even going as far as knocking cell phones out of their hands. This is all intimidating behavior.” She emphasized the efforts of the local community to monitor ICE activities and disrupt immigration raids, which she deemed illegal.

Rapinoe mentioned her sorrow for Good’s family and community during this difficult time. Alongside Sue Bird, she praised NBA coaches Steve Kerr and Doc Rivers for speaking out against ICE’s actions in Minneapolis.

Byrd added that the Trump administration seems to encourage a distrust of the truth, and Rapinoe described the federal response to the incident as reminiscent of Orwellian tactics. “There was no investigation; it was just an immediate conclusion about what happened,” she reflected.

She expressed concern over the ongoing societal implications, saying, “This situation is very troubling… I hope we see a collective stand against these actions, whether it be in voting or in our communities.” Since the shooting, debates have heated up along with several incidents targeting immigration officers.

Currently, Good’s family is represented by a law firm known for its role in the George Floyd case, which resulted in a significant settlement against the city of Minneapolis. They are seeking justice and accountability following this tragic event.
