Megan Rapinoe raises concerns about the 'Save Women's Sports' initiative

Megan Rapinoe Questions Motivations Behind Women’s Sports Policies

In a recent podcast episode featuring Basketball Hall of Famer Sue Bird, former U.S. soccer player Megan Rapinoe expressed skepticism about the reasons behind efforts to restrict transgender individuals from participating in women’s sports.

She was prompted to share her thoughts after reading an op-ed by Angel City FC’s Elizabeth Eddy, which urged the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) to establish definitive gender standards through testing. Eddy’s piece received mixed reactions, drawing both support and criticism.

Rapinoe, who has celebrated victories in both the World Cup and the Olympics, took issue with a New York Post editorial that showcased Barbra Banda from the Orlando Pride. Banda had to withdraw from the Zambia national team in 2022 due to not meeting gender eligibility criteria.

She pointed out the “Save Women’s Sports” movement, posing a critical question: “Are we really protecting women in sports, or is it more about masking fears?” Rapinoe remarked in a sarcastic tone, questioning the sincerity of the claims made by proponents. “We don’t even have transgender players in the NWSL. That felt pretty disingenuous to me.”

Rapinoe also touched on the recent experiences of Landon Donovan, using his new hairpiece revelation as a parallel. She found it relatable, particularly as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, especially when likening it to the challenges faced by transgender individuals. “I was really struck by how similar their stories are, especially in terms of seeking acceptance,” she reflected. “How you feel about yourself matters really deeply.”

She emphasized the significance of rights, saying, “When we discuss issues surrounding gay and transgender rights, it’s about the fundamental need for individuals to exist comfortably in their own bodies. It’s a deep-rooted matter that, frankly, doesn’t pertain to others.” Rapinoe underscored the transformative impact that such acceptance can have on people’s lives.
