Confrontation at TPUSA Event Over Trump’s Rhetoric
On Wednesday, political commentator Megyn Kelly engaged in a heated exchange with a young liberal activist during a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event at Virginia Tech. The conversation took a serious turn as the activist suggested that President Donald Trump’s statements contributed to the political climate surrounding the recent assassination of TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk.
Kelly, sharing the stage with Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, countered the student’s assertion, emphasizing that the attacker was motivated by leftist ideology. “Let’s be clear. This individual was influenced by left-wing beliefs, evidence of which can be traced back to details found at the crime scene,” she asserted.
During a Q&A segment, the young activist posed a challenging question about Trump’s influence on a political environment that allegedly led to Kirk’s death. The discussion referenced Trump’s earlier speech at Kirk’s memorial, where he seemed to differentiate Kirk’s approach from his own, stating that Kirk didn’t harbor hatred for his political opponents.
Kelly firmly pushed back, characterizing the activist’s claims as “off-base” and lacking credibility. She noted, “Your assertion lacks evidence. I believe that facts should be the basis of discussion, and yours are simply not true.”
The debate intensified when the young man claimed that a significant portion of political violence was perpetrated by Republicans, prompting a negative reaction from the audience. Kelly, while acknowledging the statistic, contended that the overall trend leaned more heavily towards violence associated with the left.
“That is a misrepresentation. It’s a flat-out lie,” she added, dismissing the idea that Trump’s rhetoric was responsible for Kirk’s assassination.
In a later exchange, she responded to further inquiries about whether Trump was inciting violence against liberals. Kelly defended Trump’s humor during the memorial, suggesting it was appropriate and highlighting the poignant moment when Erica Kirk forgave her husband’s murderer.
Kelly argued that Trump, facing serious threats and challenges, has the right to express anger towards those who oppose him. After the confrontation, she invited the activist for a rebuttal, but he chose to walk away.
