First Lady Discusses AI Dangers During Takedown Act Announcement
On Monday afternoon, First Lady Melania Trump joined President Donald Trump in the White House Rose Garden to announce his signing of the Take It Down Act. She seized this moment to highlight the risks associated with artificial intelligence, describing it as a “digital candy” that can be weaponized, manipulate beliefs, impact emotions negatively, and, in extreme cases, be fatal.
“This law represents a significant step towards ensuring that all Americans, particularly young individuals, are better protected from the misuse of images and identities through nonconsensual, intimate visuals,” Melania Trump remarked regarding the Takedown Act.
She elaborated on her concerns about AI and social media, calling them the latest evolution of “digital candies” that, while enticing, are addictive and can adversely influence children’s cognitive growth. “Unlike sugar, these technologies can be weaponized, affecting emotions and even leading to tragic outcomes,” she added.
Recently, Melania Trump met with courageous survivors and their families, as well as supportive advocates, who are acutely aware of the emotional and psychological toll that AI and deepfake abuse can impose.
The First Lady recognized a survivor named Elliston Berry for her bravery and commitment to change, stating, “Elliston, your voice and those like yours have made this bill a national priority.”
Melania also acknowledged the bipartisan efforts in Congress to advance this legislation. “Thank you to everyone. Thank you for prioritizing people over politics,” she expressed.
As First Lady, she emphasized her commitment to enhancing children’s well-being, promoting kindness, and fostering a safer online environment. “Today, I’m proud to say that our highest values are now reflected in our laws,” she declared.
Melania also expressed gratitude to her husband, saying, “Thank you, President Trump, for your support in this initiative. But this is just the beginning of our work on this issue.”
She concluded with a call to action for the Federal Trade Commission and the private sector: “Through the Takedown Act, we affirm that our children’s happiness is paramount to our families and the future of America,” Melania Trump stated.
