Thanks to first lady Melania Trump, humanitarian aid is set to reach residents in a Ukrainian city.
In a statement released on Friday, she announced that both Russia and Ukraine had agreed to halt military actions in Oleshky and facilitate civilian evacuations.
‘She wants to save children, and that’s her main focus. … Her goal is to reunite babies with their families.’
“The situation in Oleshky is critical. It’s a front-line war zone on the brink of catastrophe. The remaining residents there are mainly elderly individuals in desperate need of medical care, food, and clean drinking water,” she stated in the release.
“People in Oleshky have very limited electricity, live on mined roads, and regularly face military strikes,” she pointed out. “It was clear that without my intervention, delivering humanitarian aid or evacuating the elderly would be a lost cause.”
The ceasefire is set to commence on Thursday.
President Donald Trump commented on this arrangement during a press briefing with reporters in Washington, D.C.
“She wants to save children; that’s really what it comes down to,” he expressed. “Both parties are cooperating with her, which means she’s handling the situation very well.”
“Her aim is to see infants returned to their families, and that’s the conversation between Russia and Ukraine,” he added.
The first lady also conveyed in her press release that evacuees would have the option to relocate to Russia or other areas in Ukraine.
“I have arranged for a neutral American media organization to accompany Russian and Ukrainian teams on-site to document the process,” she noted. “This documentation is essential to ensure that each family’s wishes are honored.”

Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, the conflict has severely impacted Ukraine.
Oleshky, which was seized by Russian forces on the first day of the invasion, has remained under occupation ever since. It used to be home to approximately 24,000 residents.
