Iran is reportedly ramping up efforts to target U.S. personnel abroad, with information suggesting that plots to kill Americans have reached significant phases in the Middle East and elsewhere, according to an intelligence memo. This memo was sent to Secretary of State Marco Rubio by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton shortly after the State Department advised non-essential U.S. government employees and their families to leave Saudi Arabia because of increasing attacks from Iran-supported Houthi rebels.
The validity of this unclassified intelligence memo has been confirmed by U.S. officials. The memo notes that authorities have gathered intelligence indicating Iran’s intensified efforts to target U.S. personnel. It expresses that “the lethal plotting efforts by the Iranians against U.S. citizens have reached advanced stages in both the Middle East and certain other countries.”
Furthermore, the memo mentions that intelligence officials plan to reclassify some material to allow sharing it with State Department personnel. A U.S. official explained to Fox News Digital that the government is always monitoring and assessing evolving security threats. They mentioned, “Regarding our staffing at embassies, we constantly evaluate new information about the security environment.” The possibility of Houthi attacks and Iranian plots aimed at U.S. officials is influencing decisions about staffing adjustments at embassies in the region.
Meanwhile, this intelligence report about Iranian threats corresponds with ongoing considerations by President Donald Trump regarding potential military strikes against Iran if no agreement can be reached between Tehran and Washington. Earlier in the week, the State Department addressed concerns that it had ordered the withdrawal of non-essential personnel from across the Gulf region, clarifying that this directive specifically pertains to Saudi Arabia.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott labeled any claims of a wider regional evacuation as “inaccurate.” The latest advisory from the State Department reiterates warnings to Americans about reconsidering travel to the Middle East, particularly following missile attacks attributed to Iranian-backed Houthi rebels targeting Saudi Arabia.
The Department of State has officially mandated an ordered departure for non-emergency U.S. government staff and their family members in Saudi Arabia. As this situation unfolds, the focus remains on security and ensuring the safety of American personnel in the region.
