Argentina vs. Cape Verde: A Thrilling World Cup Match
On Friday, Argentina aimed to secure its second consecutive World Cup victory, but they faced a challenging match against Cape Verde, one of the tournament’s underdog favorites.
The small island nation, ranked 64th in the world, managed to keep Argentina at bay for nearly 30 minutes. However, Lionel Messi broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, giving Argentina the lead.
This marked Messi’s 20th career goal in World Cup play, a milestone he also reached in Qatar. With this achievement, he became the first player to score seven or more goals in multiple World Cups, and it’s worth mentioning, that was also his eighth straight World Cup goal.
Usually, when Argentina takes the lead, they tend to maintain it. But just after halftime, Cape Verde’s Deroy Duarte struck back, leveling the score at 1-1 with a spectacular goal.
As the match progressed, Argentina ramped up the pressure. Messi even had a dangerous free-kick opportunity from just outside the box, but Cape Verde managed to defend it effectively, leading to extra time.
It didn’t take long for Cape Verde to find themselves in a familiar position—again trailing. Argentina regained the lead in the 92nd minute through Lisandro Martinez’s goal, but Cape Verde had other ideas. In a stunning response, Sidney López Cabral scored in the 103rd minute, once more equalizing the score.
Prior to this match, Argentina had conceded only two goals over ten consecutive World Cup matches. Cape Verde, on the other hand, achieved this feat in just one game.
Then, in the 111th minute, Messi’s corner kick led to a header from Cristian Romero, which ultimately resulted in an own goal after hitting a Cape Verde defender’s arm. This goal solidified Argentina’s lead.
Even though Argentina had a few late-game opportunities, they managed to avoid what could have been a historic upset. In the end, it was an impressive performance from Cape Verde, and now Argentina must regroup for a tough round of 16 match against Egypt in Atlanta on Tuesday.
