Met Gala Faces Disappointment as Honorary Chair LeBron James Withdraws Just Hours Before Event

The 2025 Met Gala faced a significant setback on Monday when Honorary Chairman LeBron James canceled just hours before the event. He cited a knee injury as the reason for his sudden absence from this pivotal fashion gathering.

In a post he shared on Monday, James expressed his disappointment: “Unfortunately, due to a knee injury, I’m not able to attend the Met Gala in New York tonight, as I lasted at the end of the season.” He added, “I hate missing out on historical events! My beautiful, powerful queen holds down the castle as she always did!”

According to reports from ESPN, James sustained a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his left knee during Game 5 when he collided with Don Teddy Vincento from the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Met Gala is taking place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Haute Couture Festival Chair’s role includes various responsibilities, such as promoting the event, shaping its themes, coordinating meals, and overseeing performance details for the evening.

This annual gala is a fundraiser for the Costume Institute, with individual tickets priced at $75,000 and tables for guests starting at $350,000, often secured by fashion houses inviting high-profile stars to attend.

Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour serves as the chief chair for this year’s event, themed “Superfine: Tailing Black Style.” Celebrities expected to grace the event include Co-Chairs A$AP Rocky, Rihanna, Pharrell Williams, Doechii, Usher, André3000, Janelle Monáe, Zendaya, and Tyla. It’s known for its unpredictable guest arrivals, making it one of the most eagerly anticipated nights in both entertainment and fashion.
