Meta Partners with NABTU for AI Data Center Construction
On Wednesday, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced a national collaboration with the North American Construction Workers Union (NABTU). This marks the first instance where the development of an AI data center will involve union participation.
The partnership format is aimed at combining the resources of Meta and NABTU, which advocates for about 3 million construction workers. This is a significant step, as it represents the first formal relationship Meta has established nationally with organized labor.
The agreement emerged from talks between NABTU President Sean McGarvey and Meta’s President Dina Powell McCormick. McGarvey expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating that “NABTU is proud to partner with Meta.” He emphasized the importance of the Future for Everyone Fund, suggesting it aligns with what communities across America need. He also highlighted the necessity of workforce planning and industry partnerships to effectively connect individuals with jobs that support their families.
In a statement to Breitbart News, McCormick shared her pride in this collaboration with NABTU. She noted that working with McGarvey has been an honor and described the moment as pivotal. According to her, the skilled tradespeople involved are essential for developing the American infrastructure, which must lead in the global AI competition.
The newly announced $1 billion Future Is For Everyone Fund focuses on benefiting the communities alongside Meta’s data center operations. The fund aims to forge connections between Meta and local labor unions, apprenticeship programs, and skilled craftsmen engaged in the physical aspects of constructing these facilities.
As part of this collaboration, NABTU’s local affiliates will adapt apprenticeships and training programs to meet the specific needs of data center construction and maintenance. This includes specialized training in areas like high-voltage systems, cooling and fire suppression systems, along with secure fiber networks. It appears that Meta is committed to viewing infrastructure construction as a long-term collaboration with organized labor, rather than just a temporary engagement.
