Meta Expands Data Center Project in Louisiana
Meta has announced plans to increase its expansive data center initiative in Richland Parish, Louisiana, to a staggering 5 gigawatts of computing capacity, positioning it among the most significant data centers ever constructed. The company made the revelation on Monday.
This expansion pushes Meta’s total investment in the region to over $50 billion, marking it as one of the largest infrastructure investments in AI globally. Once the facility is fully operational, it’s anticipated to generate more than 1,000 jobs. Mehta highlighted that Louisiana entities have already been awarded contracts exceeding $1.6 billion since the project commenced in December 2024.
Additionally, Meta plans to allocate over $1 billion for enhancing local infrastructure, which includes upgrades to roads and water and sewage systems.
Mehta mentioned that the expansion also involves an energy deal, which should save customers of Entergy Louisiana more than $2 billion over two decades. The company will manage the expenses related to energy, water, and infrastructure necessary for the data center.
The development is already impacting Richland Parish, a rural area with around 20,000 residents. Notably, teachers in the district saw their annual bonuses increase from $10,000 to over $50,000 this year, largely thanks to the tax revenue generated from the data center project.
“This is a life-changing moment for teachers and their families, and it significantly enhances our schools,” commented Richland Parish School District Superintendent Sheldon Jones. He added that Mehta’s investment is aiding the district in attracting high-quality teaching candidates.
In a separate development, Meta is contributing $5 million to Louisiana Delta Community College aimed at establishing scholarships for locals to pursue training for positions at the data center. Starting with the Class of 2026, high school graduates in the Richland Diocese will qualify for complete scholarships to trade programs related to data center careers.
This scholarship program follows an earlier announcement in June regarding the launch of America’s Workforce Academy, a new initiative providing skills training, free tuition, and job guarantees for graduates.
