Meta’s New AI Integration for Ad Targeting

Meta, led by Mark Zuckerberg, has unveiled plans to enhance ad targeting and content recommendations across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, by leveraging user interactions with its AI Digital Assistant.

A recent update from Meta indicates that, starting December 16th, recommended systems will incorporate data from user engagements with AI products like the Meta AI Assistant. Notifications about this shift will start rolling out to users on October 7th, serving as a heads-up for users globally.

The Meta AI is available on major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. It can also function as a standalone app and website. Users can engage with the assistants similarly to CHATGPT, asking for instructions, generating images from prompts, and exploring topics. Such interactions will influence the content displayed in users’ feeds and the advertisements they encounter. Previously, Zuckerberg mentioned that Meta AI had reached “1 billion active users every month,” revealing opportunities for integrating paid recommendations and considering a subscription option for more intensive AI usage.

Christy Harris, Meta’s Privacy and Data Policy Manager, emphasized the importance of transparency in these updates, mentioning that many users likely assume that AI chat signals are already being used for personalization. “This marks an evolution in our personalization methods and enhances our ability to offer better recommendations,” Harris stated. She added that even if users believe this is already happening, it’s vital to be clear and proactive before utilizing this data in this new way.

Harris illustrated her point with an example: users discussing family vacation plans with Meta AI may see travel-related content, such as family-oriented travel reels and hotel advertisements. This feature extends to both text and speech interactions, including those made using Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses. “Whether you’re typing or speaking, those signals will still inform what we show you,” she explained.

Importantly, users cannot opt out of these updates, although Harris mentioned that those who don’t use Meta AI won’t be impacted. “The updates will apply only when you engage with Meta AI.” Additionally, Meta plans to roll out these updates to users in the UK and EU in accordance with local regulatory requirements, indicating a tailored approach for compliance.
