Meta Settles Lawsuit with Robbie Starbuck

Meta Platforms has reached a settlement regarding a lawsuit with Robbie Starbuck, who had claimed that the company’s artificial intelligence was involved in the January 6th Capitol riots.

Details of the settlement remain undisclosed, but it’s noted that Starbuck, a conservative figure critical of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, will collaborate with Meta to address “ideological and political bias” within the company’s AI systems.

According to a joint statement from both parties, there is a sense of mutual satisfaction with the outcome. “Since engaging in important discussions around these issues, Meta has made significant improvements in the accuracy of its AI, as well as in reducing ideological and political biases,” the statement revealed.

Looking forward, the commitment is clear. Meta and Starbuck will continue to work together over the next few months to tackle biases and minimize the potential for misleading responses generated by AI models.

Meta did not provide an immediate comment when requested.

On Friday, Starbuck shared during a segment on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that both he and Meta recognized the implications of the issues on users of the platform. “The main goal of my lawsuit has always been to solve this problem for everyone,” he stated. “It’s crucial that we prevent AI from influencing elections in uncomfortable ways.”

When asked by host Andrew Ross Sorkin about financial compensation, Starbuck avoided revealing specifics, noting he was still aligned on the terms of his collaboration with Meta.

“Ensuring fairness for consumers has always been my primary goal, and I’m pleased to contribute towards that,” Starbuck expressed on social media. “As we enter a future where AI plays a significant role in everyday life, it’s important to have a consistent voice advocating for ideological fairness.”

Starbuck initially filed the lawsuit against Meta on April 29, seeking over $5 million in damages. On April 30, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Joel Kaplan, publicly apologized for the incident.

“Robbie, I saw your video—it’s unacceptable. This is not indicative of how our AI operates. I’m sorry we communicated this, and the adjustments we implemented didn’t rectify the core issue,” Kaplan stated on social media.
