Meta reveals impressive $95 billion investment in AI, driven by new stock offerings

Meta Platforms has ambitious plans to invest up to $95 billion in its artificial intelligence initiatives, despite some jitters among investors regarding the significant amounts the social media company has already committed to AI.

The company, led by Mark Zuckerberg, outlined a strategy to generate funds through stock offerings, possibly starting as early as next year. This plan includes raising about $35 billion through public offerings, which would consist of $22.5 billion in Class A common stock and $12.5 billion in depositary shares related to mandatory convertible preferred stock.

Additionally, Meta is considering an at-the-market stock offering program that could raise up to $60 billion. This would involve creating a new class of nonvoting stock, known as “Class C.” The company indicated that it might sell shares of this new stock gradually, although details are still being worked out.

Strategically, Meta has attracted interest from major players like Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, and Broadcom, who are looking to purchase up to $5 billion worth of common stock from the offering.

As Meta moves forward, the tech industry’s pivot towards AI is notable—overall investment in data centers and related AI infrastructure is projected to reach $10.3 trillion between 2025 and 2032, according to reports.

However, investor anxiety has sometimes surfaced regarding Zuckerberg’s costly AI strategy. While Meta reported record revenues in the third quarter, there’s lingering concern about how the company will secure funding for its expansive AI goals.

On Monday, Meta’s stock dipped about 1% when the market opened but recovered most of those losses by the afternoon.

Much of Meta’s focus on AI revolves around its newly launched AI agent, Muse, with the company restructuring itself to facilitate its development through Superintelligence Labs. Zuckerberg envisions a vast network of Muse agents designed to enhance productivity for individuals and businesses.

Meta’s aggressive push into AI has already caused its capital expenditures to soar, expected to reach as high as $145 billion this year.

AI is reportedly aiding Meta in launching new products like AI-enabled smartglasses and the Muse agent itself. The company asserts that AI is enhancing user engagement and boosting ad performance.

The financial connections between a few major AI companies—some of which are looking to invest in Meta’s stock offerings—have raised concerns on Wall Street. Investors fear that any downturn in AI could disproportionately affect companies that rely heavily on each other’s investments in the technology.
