Meta strikes agreements with CNN, Fox News, and various media companies for AI collaboration

Meta Reaches Agreements with News Publishers

Meta Inc., led by Mark Zuckerberg, has announced that it has signed agreements with various news publishers, including Fox News and CNN, to use their articles in its AI chatbot. This move aims to enhance user experience by providing “real-time content” through links to articles and websites when users input questions into the company’s AI tools.

In addition to CNN and Fox News, Meta has also secured partnerships with Fox Sports, Le Monde Group, People, The Daily Caller, The Washington Examiner, and USA Today, among others. This collaboration allows users to access a broader range of sources, which could lead to discovering timely and relevant content tailored to individual interests.

According to a blog post from Meta, when users ask news-related questions, the AI will offer information and links from these diverse content providers. The terms are reminiscent of a previous deal Meta made with Reuters back in October 2024, which was a multi-year agreement with undisclosed compensation, as mentioned by a company spokesperson.

While the financial details of this latest agreement remain undisclosed, Meta has indicated that it intends to expand its collaborations with additional news organizations in the future.

This development marks a shift for Meta, which has previously faced criticism from both domestic and international leaders advocating for appropriate compensation to publishers for their contributions. The involved publishers represent a political spectrum, indicative of Meta’s efforts to address ongoing accusations of political bias within its platforms.

The News and Media Alliance, representing numerous news organizations including the Post, has expressed cautious optimism regarding this announcement. Daniel Coffey, the alliance’s CEO, highlighted that these agreements underscore the value of licensed content and illustrate that licensing is feasible, emphasizing the importance of legal certainty for fair dealings.

In 2024, Meta removed the Facebook News tab for users in the U.S. and Australia, which had previously restricted Canadian users from accessing news following new laws mandating payments to publishers.

As of 2022, Meta had started informing U.S. news publishers that it would cease payments for their content, fully withdrawing funding from existing agreements. Increased scrutiny on publishers has arisen due to concerns that Meta, along with competitors like OpenAI and Google, might be utilizing copyrighted materials to train AI models without proper permissions or credit.

Recently, notable conservative figures encouraged President Trump to challenge Big Tech’s assertions about the protections provided by the “fair use doctrine.” Additionally, it’s worth noting that Fox News is owned by News Corp, which also publishes The Post.
