Mysterious 18th Century Coin Found on Nantucket Beach

A fascinating piece of history has turned up on a Nantucket beach, all thanks to a dedicated metal detector enthusiast.

On October 9, it was reported that Travis Nichols, known locally for his keen eye in locating lost jewelry and other metal treasures, unearthed a Spanish 1 real silver coin from 1782 along the south coast of the island. Nichols has a collection of over 300 coins, and he finds great joy in his hobby.

He described the moment he discovered the coin as a “great feeling,” and it’s easy to picture the excitement in such a find.

“Sure, helping someone find their $25,000 ring is significant,” he commented about his community contributions, “but honestly, finding a $30 silver coin feels better if I’m being honest.”

According to Nichols, the coin likely originated from Mexico City, judging by its markings. He also noted that, relative to other coins found in the area, this one is on the newer side; some coins on the island date back to the 1650s.

He mused about how this particular coin arrived there, asking, “What was it doing on the south coast?” It seems the spot where he found it has a rich history, as he had previously discovered an old penny there that had been cut in half—perhaps a reflection of older times when even a penny was seen as a significant amount.

With the beach being quite popular, Nichols plans to keep searching. “We’ll see what else is out there,” he said, optimistic about unearthing more treasures.

Just this past summer, a group of friends stumbled upon a jar filled with coins and gold while looking for a German V-2 rocket in Poland.
